چکیده

The dust clouds in the torus of the quasar are irradiated by the central source, and the clouds at the inner radius of the torus re-radiate mostly in the near-infrared (NIR) wavebands. The ratio of the near-infrared luminosity to the bolometric luminosity LNIR/Lbol can therefore reflect the torus geometry to some extent. We find a significant correlation between the ratio of the near-infrared luminosity to the bolometric luminosity LNIR/Lbol and the central black hole mass Mbh for the Palomar-Green(PG) quasars, whereas no correlation is found between the Eddington ratio Lbol/LEdd and the ratio LNIR/Lbol. Similar correlations are found for the mid-infrared and far-infrared cases. It may imply that the torus geometry, i.e., the solid angle subtended by the dust torus as seen from the central source, does not evolve with the accretion rate. The correlation of the solid angle subtended by the torus with the central black hole mass Mbh implies that the formation of the dust torus is likely regulated by the central black hole mass. We find that the torus thickness H increases with quasar bolometric luminosities, which is different with the constant torus thickness H with luminosity assumed in the receding torus model. The average relative thickness H/R of the tori in the PG quasars derived from the ratios of the infrared to bolometric luminosities is ∼ 0.9. The further IR observations on a larger quasar sample including more fainter quasars by the Spitzer Space Telescope will help understand the physics of the dust tori in quasars. Dust in PG quasars as seen by ISO

Infrared to millimeter spectral energy distributions (SEDs) have been obtained for a random sample of 17 Palomar Green quasars. The observations were carried out between 4.8 and 200 μm with ISO and supplemented for ten sources with IRAM at 1.3 mm. Eight sources were detected in the far infrared for the first time. The SEDs provide evidence for considerable dust emission and do not support the e...

The Near-infrared Variability of a Sample of Optically Selected Quasars

A complete sample of 108 optically selected quasars, the Palomar-Green quasars, has been studied at near-infrared wavelengths over an average time base of about 6 yr; in some cases the time base extends to 20 yr. The measurements show that about half the quasars have a high probability of having varied, but that half show little evidence of variability, in sharp contrast to published studies in...

Optical/Near-Infrared Imaging of Infrared-Excess Palomar-Green QSOs

Ground-based high spatial-resolution (FWHM < 0.3–0.8) optical and nearinfrared imaging (0.4—2.2 μm) is presented for a complete sample of optically selected Palomar-Green QSOs with far-infrared excesses at least as great as those of “warm” AGN-like ultraluminous infrared galaxies (Lir/Lbig−blue−bump > 0.46). In all cases, the host galaxies of the QSOs were detected and most have discernable two...

HERSCHEL SURVEY OF THE PALOMAR-GREEN QSOs AT LOW REDSHIFT

We investigate the global cold dust properties of 85 nearby (z ≤ 0.5) QSOs, chosen from the PalomarGreen sample of optically luminous quasars. We determine their infrared spectral energy distributions and estimate their rest-frame luminosities by combining Herschel data from 70 to 500 μm with nearinfrared and mid-infrared measurements from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) and the Wide-Fiel...

A 1.2 mm MAMBO/IRAM-30m Survey of Dust Emission from the Highest Redshift PSS Quasars

We report 250 GHz (1.2 mm) observations of redshift ≥ 3.8 quasars from the Palomar Sky Survey (PSS) sample, using the Max-Planck Millimetre Bolometer (MAMBO) array at the IRAM 30-metre telescope. Eighteen sources were detected and upper limits were obtained for 44 with 3 σ flux density limits in the range 1.5–4 mJy. Adopting typical dust temperatures of 40–50 K, we derive dust masses of 10− 10M...
